Book Of The Month - Happy Sexy Millionaire
by Alfie Powell, on 13 May, 2021
If, like me, you come from the world of digital content and publishing – it’s a long shot but you might be – then you’ll have heard Steven Bartlett’s name more than a few times and you’ll be acutely aware that every single CEO of a social publishing company under the age of 45 tries their hardest to be him.
When you look at what Bartlett has achieved at the age of just 28, it’s absolutely no surprise that he has become a figure of such intense envy and unmarred respect and by all accounts, he will not be slowing down any time soon.
As a little background, Bartlett was born in Botswana and many years later, found himself as a university dropout working from his bedroom in Manchester. It was in this bedroom that the then 22-year-old put his creative knowhow to the test and ended up creating Social Chain and Media Chain; companies that would grow to become some of the largest ever in their field.
Now in its sixth year of operation, Social Chain - which Steven Bartlett and co-founder Dominic McGregor parted ways from last summer - has a few clients that you may just have heard of, including the likes of Apple, Amazon, Coca-Cola, Superdry and Nokia, all the while Media Chain reaches up to and beyond 1.8 billion people a month through a series of online brands that it owns.
Not too bad, eh?
As per his website, Bartlett has spoken at the United Nations, SXSW 2019, VTEX Day alongside Barack Obama, Ted Talk and many, many more events and organisations.
Now though, Bartlett has a book out in the world, and it’s called Happy Sexy Millionaire, which you may have guessed from the title of this article. Happy Sexy Millionaire chronicles Bartlett’s journey from his bedroom in Manchester where he wrote that he wants to be a “happy, sexy millionaire” by the time he was 25 in his diary, to where he is now, and how he achieved so much more than that.
The full title for the book is Happy Sexy Millionaire: Unexpected Truths about Fulfilment, Love and Success, and has become a Sunday Times Best Seller. As described in the blurb itself:
“We are losing ourselves. We're chasing the wrong things, asking the wrong questions, and polluting our minds. It's time to stop, it's time to resist and it's time to rethink the fundamental social blueprint that our lives are built upon.
“As an 18-year-old, black, broke, lonely, insecure, university drop-out, from a bankrupt family, I wrote in my diary that I wanted to be a 'Happy Sexy Millionaire' by the age of 25. By 25 I was a multi-millionaire having created a business worth over $300m dollars. Ironically, in achieving everything I set out to, I learnt that I was wrong about almost everything... The world had lied to me. It lied to me about how you attain fulfilment, love and success, why those things matter, and what those words actually mean.
“In this book, I'll dismantle the most popular, unaddressed lies about happiness that we've been led to believe. I'll expose the source of these lies, examine the incentives that fuel them and replace them with a practical set of scientifically proven and unconventional ideas that will help you to live a truly fulfilled life, a life full of the love you seek and the success you deserve”.
Essentially, it’s not all about just making cash at the end of the day. Of course, if you want to do that then this is a good book to start at, but what often gets overlooked in these ‘get rich quick schemes’ is one’s mental wellbeing and how fulfilled the life of a successful entrepreneur leaves you.
